Microphone and headset test

Check your microphone before your first call: watch the input level, record five seconds, play it back, and get a plain verdict on what to fix.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type or upload is sent, stored or logged — there is no server behind this page to send it to.

The browser will ask for permission to use your microphone. Speak normally — the level is read on this page and the test recording stays in memory.

Most bad call audio is the microphone

When a prospect says “you’re breaking up” or “can you speak up?”, the cause is usually not the network. It is a laptop microphone half a metre away, a headset muted on its cable, or the wrong input picked by the browser. All three are visible in a few seconds of testing — and invisible until someone complains.

The verdict here measures two things from your recording: how loud your voice is, and how far it stands above the room between words. A boom microphone close to the mouth improves both, and is the single most useful upgrade for anyone on the phone all day.

If the browser cannot hear you

Check the site permission in the address bar, then the operating system: macOS and Windows both have privacy settings that block the microphone for a browser as a whole. Close other calling apps, which can hold the microphone, and pick the headset in the list rather than relying on the default.

Bluetooth headsets switch to a lower-quality mode when the microphone is in use. A wired or USB-dongle headset avoids that, which is the second most common fix after moving the microphone closer.

Microphone tests, answered

Is my voice recorded or uploaded?

The five-second test is recorded into your browser’s memory so you can play it back, and it is discarded when you stop the test or close the tab. Nothing is sent anywhere — there is no server behind this page.

Why does the browser ask for permission?

Every browser requires your permission before a page can use the microphone. If you blocked it by mistake, click the lock or camera icon in the address bar, allow the microphone for this site, and start the test again.

What level should my microphone be at?

Speaking normally, the meter should sit well into the middle and only occasionally touch the end. The verdict compares your voice with the room between words: a clear voice in a quiet room reads as good, and the advice says what to change if not.

Does the playback sound exactly like a phone call?

Not quite. A phone call narrows the sound further and the network adds its own processing, so treat the playback as a check for level, distortion and background noise rather than a preview of the exact call quality.

Can I choose which headset plays the test sound?

In Chrome and Edge, yes — a speaker or headset list appears once the microphone is allowed. Other browsers play through the system’s default output, which you can change in the operating system’s sound settings.
