Hi Sam, it’s Alex from Northwind, 415-555-0134. I’m calling about how your team follows up on inbound demo requests — I have one idea worth two minutes. Call me back, or reply to my email. Again, Alex at Northwind, 415-555-0134.
Under 30 seconds at a normal speaking pace of 150 words a minute. The number is said twice on purpose.
Most calls end at voicemail
On most outbound lists, more calls reach a voicemail than a person. A rep who improvises each one leaves forty different messages a day of varying length and clarity. A rep with a script leaves the same short, clear one — and gets back to dialing sooner.
The shape is always the same: who you are, your number, one reason, your number again. Everything else is optional, and most of it makes the message worse.
Leaving them faster
Our article on voicemail drop covers recording a message once and leaving it with a click, and the rules that apply to doing so.
Sales voicemails, answered
How long should a sales voicemail be?
Under thirty seconds. At a normal speaking pace of about 150 words a minute that is roughly seventy-five spoken words — and every digit of your phone number counts as one. The timer under the script shows where you are.
Why say the number twice?
Once near the start so it can be caught without replaying, and once at the end for the person writing it down. A number said only at the end of a long message is the one people give up on.
Should a voicemail try to sell?
No. Its job is to make your name familiar and give one reason to call back or open your email. Pitching in a voicemail makes it longer and makes the call-back less likely.
What is a trigger-event voicemail?
One that opens with something that just happened at their company — a funding round, a new office, a job posting — and connects it to why you called. It is the easiest way to sound like you called them, not a list.
Record it once, drop it on every machine
With voicemail drop in CallPal, a rep who reaches a machine leaves a pre-recorded message with one click and moves on to the next contact.
