International dialing codes

How to call any of 245 countries and territories from any other: the exact digits for a landline, and the + form for a mobile or a CRM.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type or upload is sent, stored or logged — there is no server behind this page to send it to.

  • An example United Kingdom number is shown. Type the real one to see exactly what to dial.
  • Exit code from United States: 011. Country code of United Kingdom: 44.
  • United Kingdom numbers are written with a leading 0 for calls inside the country. Leave it out when dialing from abroad — it is already removed above.

Three parts, and one you leave out

An international call is exit code + country code + national number. The exit code belongs to where you are, the country code to where they are, and the national number is what is left once its domestic trunk prefix — the UK’s 0, Russia’s 8 — is taken off.

The + sign stands in for the exit code on any mobile phone and in most dialers, which is why contact lists should be stored in the + form: the same number then works from every country, and nobody has to remember whether it is 011 or 00.

Cleaning a whole list

The phone number formatter turns a column of numbers in any format into E.164 at once, and the area code lookup tells +1 numbers apart.

International dialing, answered

How do I dial an international number?

From a landline: your country’s exit code (011 from the US and Canada, 00 from most of Europe), then the country code, then the number without its leading trunk digit. From a mobile, + replaces the exit code and works from anywhere.

What is an exit code?

The digits that tell your phone network the next number is in another country. They depend on where you are calling from, not where you are calling to — 011 from the US, 00 from the UK, 0011 from Australia.

Why do I drop the 0 at the start of the number?

Many countries write numbers with a trunk prefix — 0 in the UK, 8 in Russia — that is only dialed inside the country. Dialing from abroad, you leave it out after the country code. A few countries, like Italy, keep the leading 0 because it is part of the number; the tool handles both.

Which format should I store numbers in?

E.164: a +, the country code and the number, with no spaces — +442079460958. It is what dialers, CRMs and carriers expect, and it works the same from every country.

Why do some countries share a code?

+1 covers the United States, Canada and much of the Caribbean, and +7 covers Russia and Kazakhstan. Within those, the area code decides the country — for +1 numbers, the area code lookup tells you which.

Call abroad from your CRM

CallPal dials the E.164 number stored on the contact and routes it through the trunk you set up for that country, so reps never have to work out an exit code.
