SIP trunk settings checker
Fill in what your carrier gave you. See what will stop the trunk registering or calls going out — with the corrected value where there is one.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type or upload is sent, stored or logged — there is no server behind this page to send it to.
3 things will stop this working
Checked against the settings alone. If they all pass and the trunk still will not register, the carrier is refusing the credentials or the IP — its portal’s call log will say which.
- FixCredential authentication needs a username.
- FixCredential authentication needs a password.
- FixAdd the number calls should show. It must be one your carrier has assigned to you.
- OKSIP server sip.telnyx.com looks right.
- OKPort 5060 matches UDP.
- OKUDP is the default every carrier supports. TLS encrypts signalling if your carrier offers it.
- OKulaw, alaw — fine for the phone network.
Most trunk failures are typed, not technical
When a SIP trunk will not register, the instinct is to suspect the network. Far more often the cause is in the form: sip:sip.telnyx.com where the host should be, port 5060 with TLS selected, a password copied with a trailing space, or a Twilio trunk set to register when Twilio does not accept registrations.
Each of those can be seen from the settings alone, so this page checks them without touching your carrier. If everything passes and the trunk still fails, the carrier is rejecting something the form cannot see — its portal’s call or registration log will say what.
Step-by-step setup
The setup guides walk through Telnyx, Twilio, Flowroute and VoIP.ms screen by screen, and the BYOC guide explains what a trunk is for.
SIP trunk setup, answered
Why won’t my SIP trunk register?
Most often one of five things: a scheme or port pasted into the host field, the wrong port for the transport (TLS is normally 5061), a username or password with a stray space, a carrier that does not accept registration at all, or an IP-authenticated trunk whose allow-list does not include the dialer.
Does Twilio Elastic SIP Trunking support registration?
No. A Twilio trunk authenticates outbound calls with a credential list (digest) or an IP access list, and the host is your trunk’s own Termination SIP URI ending in pstn.twilio.com. Setting it to register is a common reason it fails.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. The check runs on the text in the form, in your browser. There is no lookup and no connection to the carrier, which is also why it cannot tell you whether the carrier accepts the password — only whether the settings are shaped right.
Which codecs should a SIP trunk use?
G.711 — ulaw in North America, alaw in most other places — listed first. The phone network runs on it, so it needs no transcoding. Wideband codecs like Opus help on the browser side, not on the carrier side.
What format should the caller ID be in?
E.164: a plus sign, the country code and the number, with no spaces — +14155550134. It must also be a number your carrier has assigned to your account, or the call will be refused or shown with a different number.
Connect the trunk in a couple of minutes
CallPal has presets for the common carriers and a Test button that checks the trunk with your carrier, so a bad setting shows up before a rep’s first call does.
