DID (direct inward dialing number)

A DID, or direct inward dialing number, is an individual phone number assigned to a business by a carrier that routes directly to a specific person, team or system without going through a switchboard. In outbound calling, the DID is the number presented to the person being called.

Which DID an outbound call presents is a decision, not an accident. Presenting a company number rather than a rep’s mobile means callbacks reach the business, and the number survives the rep leaving.

Teams calling several regions often hold DIDs in each, so a call to one area presents a number from that area — see local presence dialing.

Under BYOC the DIDs belong to the business, registered with its own carrier, which is why switching software does not require porting them.
