BYOC (bring your own carrier)
BYOC — bring your own carrier — is an arrangement where a business contracts directly with a telecoms carrier for its calls and connects that carrier to its calling software, rather than buying minutes bundled from the software vendor. The vendor provides the dialer; the carrier provides the call.
The commercial difference is who sets the per-minute price. Under a bundled model the software vendor buys wholesale minutes and resells them with a margin. Under BYOC the business negotiates its own rate and the software vendor never touches the minute.
The practical difference is ownership. Phone numbers stay registered to the business, so changing calling software does not mean porting numbers — which is otherwise one of the largest switching costs in this category.
BYOC requires connecting a SIP trunk, which is a configuration step a bundled product does not have. That is the trade: an afternoon of setup against no markup and no lock-in. More on how CallPal does BYOC.
