SIP trunk
A SIP trunk is a virtual connection between a business’s calling system and a telecoms carrier, carrying voice calls over the internet using the Session Initiation Protocol. It replaces the physical phone lines a business would once have leased, and it is what a call actually travels over in any modern cloud calling setup.
Bundled calling products include a trunk you never see, because the vendor owns the carrier relationship. A BYOC product asks you to connect your own, which means entering the credentials your carrier gives you: a host, a username and a password.
A trunk carries a limited number of simultaneous calls — its channel count — which is the number to check before putting twenty reps on the phones at once.
Running a primary and a backup trunk with different carriers is the standard defence against an outage, because a carrier having a bad afternoon is the failure mode you cannot fix yourself. How CallPal handles trunks and failover.
